Remember Hiroshima & Nagasaki
Float candle-lit grapefruit skins on the River Wey at Send Tuesday 6th August, 7pm onwards Woking Action for Peace are meeting to remember the only time so far that nuclear bombs have been used in war, in 1945 over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They killed a quarter of a million people and wiped out their cities. These atomic bombs were small compared with the 27 000 nuclear weapons in today's arsenals. 70 years later, countries are still stockpiling warheads. The UK has almost 200 nuclear weapons, which are 10 times more powerful than those dropped on Japan. Woking Action for Peace is one of hundreds of groups worldwide campaigning to make the world a safer place by persuading the nuclear powers to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. This unique ceremony will begin as daylight fades. There will be time before this for people to read out a poem or short passage or say a few words. Come and join them at the New Inn, Send, GU23 7EN from 7pm if you would like to have a meal first. The ceremony will begin at 8pm and you are encouraged to bring your own grapefruit / orange skin candles. Contact Keith at keithsc_2000@yahoo.com for further information.
