Thought for the Week: Cake

‘If I knew you were coming, I would have baked a cake!’ This saying indicates that a cake is the symbol of good hospitality and is often used in celebrations such as birthdays, weddings and religious festivals.

Each ingredient has been manufactured by hard work. The grain was milled into fine flour; a chicken laid the eggs or scientists have investigated the best egg substitutes; butter was churned, or margarine produced; sugar was refined from beet or cane / honey made by bees. These basic ingredients are mostly unappetizing in themselves. Who would eat a tablespoon of SR Flour on a plate, or a tablespoon of sugar or even just knob of butter?

The baker mixes the ingredients together and places the resulting thick batter in a baking tin. The chemistry happens when you apply heat! This is time linked. Too little and the cake is raw; too much and the cake is burnt. The baker checks to find out when it is done. Therefore, ingredients + heat + baker = deliciousness.

Therefore, if we are to achieve something good, we need to get up and do it with guidance from God. There may be struggles and challenges but mixing with people from different cultures and backgrounds will add spice to our lives.

The book of Ecclesiastes says this: -

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might Ecclesiastes 9:10

And 1 Corinthians 10:31 commands us:-

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
