Remembering Hiroshima & Nagasaki Event

On Saturday 12 August over 20 of us met up to remember the time that atomic weapons were used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Not only did the bombs destroy the cities and kill about 200,000 people but the effects of the radiation have continued down the generations of the survivors. When we float our candles down the river we join with people throughout the world to remember the people who died and follow the Japanese tradition which invites the souls of the dead to follow the candles to the sea.

Today we are building a new generation of nuclear weapons in our country which is estimated will cost over £205 billion. We are signatures to the Non Proliferation Treaty which states we should negotiate in good faith to cease the nuclear arms race and to disarm. We have done neither. The Doomsday clock run by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is set at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest to calamity it has ever been. Come and join us next year and consider how we can work for peace.
