As part of a programme of WPOF's local pilgrimage walk, about 45 people participated in the 3rd pilgrimage to Brookwood Military Cemetery. On a beautifully warm day, the tour started promptly at 2pm and we were fortunate enough to have an official guide, Eugenie Brooks from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to guide us through the many memorials, as well as pay homage to individual graves to learn about the stories of young men who gave the ultimate gift of their lives for the nation and they came from many parts of the world.
After an hour, we reached the RAF Memorial where the pilgrims participated in the first ever multi-faith service of Brookwood Last Post Association (BLPA) which is held on the first Sunday of every month. All agreed that it was a very moving experience and BLPA would like to make the WPOF multi-faith service an annual event every August.
The service was followed by delicious refreshments (and most welcome in the hot weather!) and kindly arranged by Mr Edward Jones of The Trench Experience. After a welcome rest, to close the programme, all moved back to the Canada Building near the entrance to the Cemetery to view a fascinating CWGC exhibition on the contribution of the Commonwealth soldiers in WW1.
