Khalil began by describing his early search for purpose. His journey took him across different traditions and eventually to a Franciscan monastery in Jerusalem. It was there, surrounded by people of deep devotion, that he encountered Muslims whose spirituality and sincerity made a lasting impression. This experience marked a turning point and opened the door to Islam, something Khalil describes not as a personal achievement, but as a gift from God. Over the years, he continued his studies under the guidance of a respected sheikh, developing a strong grounding in Islamic spirituality.
Fatima’s story complemented his beautifully. Growing up in Austria in a Catholic family, she described herself as spiritual but often questioning. Her introduction to Islam came unexpectedly during a stay in Istanbul, where she met a French speaking Christian Arab, who spoke to her about faith with clarity and compassion. Although initially unsure about converting, a conversation with a sheikh about surrendering to God helped her find the peace she was seeking. In time, she and Khalil were brought together through an arranged marriage facilitated by their shared spiritual teacher.
Together, Khalil and Fatima painted an intimate picture of faith as a lived journey. They spoke about the structure and discipline that prayer brings to their relationship, the importance of spiritual companionship, and the balance between personal devotion and daily responsibilities. Both acknowledged the challenges of navigating life as converts and as a family rooted in two cultures, but they emphasised how their faith has guided them through every stage.
Fatima also shared openly about motherhood, periods of loneliness, and overcoming postnatal depression, highlighting the role of prayer, meditation, and community support. Khalil added reflections from his own experience of finding belonging within a spiritual community and the ongoing process of deepening one’s faith through sincerity, practice, and service.
The discussion broadened to explore Islam’s connections with Christianity, shared moral teachings, and the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad as a model of compassion and character. Both speakers expressed a desire for greater understanding between faiths and reflected on the misconceptions that often surround Islam in Europe.
The session offered a rich and honest window into the lives of two people whose faith continues to shape their family, work, and community involvement.
